Museum Internships for College Students

The ÏãåúÖ±²¥Art Department has compiled this list of museum internships for currently enrolled college students as a reference. Please follow the links for more information and pay attention to the various deadlines and eligibility requirements.

Full-time, paid summer work opportunities at museums and visual arts organizations for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts.

Internships are available at the Getty Center and Getty Villa, plus 60+ other institutions in Los Angeles County.


Internships will be offered in a variety of areas at the Getty Center (Los Angeles, California) and Getty Villa (Malibu, California) including communications, conservation, museum education, public programming, and more.

June – August, 10 week, full-time, paid stipend ($6,000)

The Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship (GMUI) is a paid, full-time summer internship program funded by the Getty Foundation. Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM) hosts one to two GMUIs annually. GMUI application information is available in the month of April for the following summer.

Full-time, five-week internship program for ÏãåúÖ±²¥students including a one-week intern orientation at VPAM and a month-long museum studies internship with the Smithsonian Institute (SI) or National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington D.C. Organized by the Vincent Price Art Museum in collaboration with ELAC, the Smithsonian Office of Fellowships and Internships, and the Smithsonian Latino Center (SLC).

Expenses paid including travel stipend and housing accommodations

Full-time, paid summer work opportunities at performing, film, media, literary, and municipal arts organizations for college undergraduates from cultural backgrounds that have traditionally been underrepresented in the arts.

Dates variable, full-time, paid stipend ($6,000)

Various opportunities that place interns throughout the Smithsonian’s museums, research centers, and other units.

Deadlines occur on a rolling basis, follow the link to check individual postings for more information.

Most opportunities provide a stipend.


Provides specialized training in the curatorial field to students from historically underrepresented groups in the curatorial fields. The program is organized around two components, the Mellon Summer Academy and the Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship. Students must first apply to a Summer Academy.

Andrew W. Mellon Summer Academy: 

One-week program including workshops, tours, field trips, and networking events with museum professionals.

Mid-June, stipend and housing arrangements provided.

Application deadline March 1st

Andrew W. Mellon Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship Program:

Two students from the summer academy are selected to participate in this 2-year fellowship program. Fellows work with a mentor and local program coordinator during the academic year, and complete a full-time 10-week summer fellowship during the summer.

2-year Fellowship, stipend ($4,000 for the academic year plus $6,000 for the summer)


Three or four week programs for US undergraduate students to study abroad at universities across the UK.
